J Dilla’s debut solo album dropped 16 years ago, today, on February 27, 2001. This talented legend and Slum Village founder was a creative and a creator associated with soulful greats like De La Soul, Erykah Badu, Common and A Tribe Called Quest.
This solo album, Welcome 2 Detroit, was the first time he was in the spotlight for himself and his city, paving the way for D-Town to produce some of the best rappers of all time including Eminem and Big Sean. This was the start of a very well-received solo career that went so far as his 9th studio album, one of our favorites, Donuts (2006).
February is a big month for J Dilla. Not only did he release epic projects this month, but he was also born on February 7, 1974 and passed away (way too soon) on February 10, 2006. We salute Dilla today and everyday for his great contributions to hip hop - with a consistent conscious dedicated to the soul and jazz influences that came before.
If you find yourself in D-Town, be sure to check out Dilla’s Delights - a fully-inspired, organic, hip hop inspired coffeehouse and creative space (complete with a turntable).
